Insights from Postdoctoral Research on Organic Amendments
What is the focus of your postdoc work?
“Several months ago, I began my post-doctoral studies at the laboratory of Dr. Yuji Arai at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. My research focuses on the effect of organic amendments (biosolids, animal manures etc.) application on phosphorus availability in soils. And more specifically, the effect of the soluble organic matter which exists in large concentration in organic amendments on phosphorus solubility in amended soil.
As both in Israel and in a large part of the US soils are calcareous, the main phosphorus pool exists as insoluble calcium-phosphorus minerals and their phosphorus availability to crop consumption is limited. Application of organic amendments has been found to be a good source for phosphorus and many other macro-micronutrients. Thus, the understanding of phosphorus dynamic in soils applied with organic amendments can help increase yield and reduce unwanted environmental impacts.”
What got you interested in organic amendments as a source for nutrients?
“This I can ‘blame’ on my good friend and mentor, Dr. Pinchas Fine. I’ve started my MSc under the supervision of Dr. Fine, in which I learn not only that smart application of organic amendment can supply the majority (if not all) of the crop necessities, but also, that as a researcher you are able not only to ask questions, but you can also strive to receive answers and pursue knowledge.”
What are your plans after your postdoctoral research?
“I believe there is still extensive work to be done before we can completely understand the behavior of nutrients in soil which were amended with organic amendments. Thus, I hope to be able to obtain a position in one of the research centers back in Israel.”
What tip would you give someone beginning their postdoctoral research?
“I think the most important thing is to be open minded, the main reason we set out on our journey and start our postdoctoral research is to learn and obtain new tools for further research. Therefore, it can sometimes be very tedious but, in the end, it is very fulfilling and satisfying. Regardless of the above, this is an experience few can undergo and regardless of the struggle which sometimes surfaces try to have fun.”
