This innovative app, accessible at https://irrigationapp.streamlit.app, empowers growers to plan their entire season’s irrigation without the hefty price tag of in-field sensors or the constant hassle of climate monitoring.
How does it work? The app leverages satellite imagery and long-term weather data to accurately estimate almond farms’ weekly tree water use. The seasonal water budgeting approach minimizes the risk of drought stress while avoiding wasteful overwatering to ensure trees get precisely what they need when needed.
A Collaborative Seed of Innovation
The irrigation budgeting tool is a remarkable international collaboration. Researchers from the ARO-Volcani in Israel and UC Davis in the United States joined forces to integrate winter rainfall and spring canopy growth in irrigation planning. The app also updates if an orchard is underperforming, giving growers actionable insights to course-correct quickly.
Dr. Or Sperling, the research team lead, emphasized the tool’s core strengths: “This approach is low-cost, scalable, and grounded in solid science.” He worked with Zac Ellis and Prof. Maciej Zwieniecki (UC Davis).
