Sahar Malka: Invasive Weed Prevention

Sahar Malka is a BARD Graduate Student fellow at Michigan State University, currently hosted in Dr. Eric Patterson’s lab.

What is the main focus of your research“I study the phenotypic, phenological, and genomic variation of Parthenium hysterophorus, a highly invasive weed species. By combining experiments on plants from Israel and global origin with advanced genomic tools, I aim to identify distinct biotypes in Israel, trace their introduction history, and assess their competitive abilities, building a foundation for targeted management and prevention of further spread.”

What got you interested in this area of research? “My interest in weed research began during my undergraduate studies through a weed science course and lab work. This experience opened the door to studying invasive weeds and their ecological impacts on agriculture and natural ecosystems.”

What are your plans after completing this fellowship?  “Complete my PhD and pursue a postdoctoral position applying my expertise to projects that integrate plant biology and applied genomics.”

What is your tip for someone beginning their Graduate Student Fellowship? “Be proactive in building collaborations within and beyond your field. Use the fellowship to learn new methods, and explore innovative approaches.  Grow your professional network, personal relationships built through the fellowship can be valuable to progress your research and for your future in the academia.”
